checks paid declined 7.2% per year between
2006 and 2009, resulting in 6.1 billion fewer
checks paid in 2009. Because of the use of
the ACH to convert some consumer checks by
billers and merchants, the number of checks
paid differs from the number of checks
written. The number of checks written
declined less than the number of checks paid.
There were 5.7 billion fewer checks written
in 2009 than in 2006, a decline
of 6.1% per year3

rate that has remained flat the past three
years. But the number of consumers
viewing bills through banks and credit
unions climbed to 39%, up markedly
from 28% in 2007.4

eight years, the percentage of bills paid by
electronic methods increased from 17% in 2002
to 41% in 2009. In contrast, bills paid by mail
decreased from 75% to 54% of total payments

decreased from 8% in 2002 to 5% in 2009.5
