BillConnect: The Opportunity and the Solution

With online bill payment reaching critical mass, more and more billers, financial institutions, and service providers alike are experiencing the real benefits of this powerful electronic service. To make the process as seamless, secure, and error-free as possible, industry leaders look to the experience, leadership, and vision of MasterCard RPPS.

Billers find that not only do electronic bill payments from their customers post faster and more accurately than paper remittances, but the processing costs are a fraction of those for paper. Financial institutions and service providers, which have long appreciated these advantages, also enjoy profitability from their online customers and the excellent cross-sell opportunities of the online marketing channel. Many consumers are finding their financial institution's Web site an attractive financial management tool that provides a reliable, secure, one-stop payment option.

  • According to financial insights, 47% of U.S. households, or 42 million, logged on to their bank or credit union to pay bills on a monthly basis in 2010. 47% of households, or 43 million overall, pay bills directly at biller websites.1
  • A 2010 Javelin study indicates that of the household managers who paid a bill online in the previous month, about 58% did so both through a financial institution and at a biller site, up from 47% in 2009.2
  • The number of checks paid in 2009 is estimated to have been 24.4 billion, with a value of $31.6 trillion. The number of checks paid declined 7.2% per year between 2006 and 2009, resulting in 6.1 billion fewer checks paid in 2009. Because of the use of the ACH to convert some consumer checks by billers and merchants, the number of checks paid differs from the number of checks written. The number of checks written declined less than the number of checks paid. There were 5.7 billion fewer checks written in 2009 than in 2006, a decline of 6.1% per year3
  • About 54% of consumers logged in to look at their bills at biller sites in 2009, a rate that has remained flat the past three years. But the number of consumers viewing bills through banks and credit unions climbed to 39%, up markedly from 28% in 2007.4
  • Automatic deduction and online bill pay account for a growing share of household bill payments over time. In fact, over the past eight years, the percentage of bills paid by electronic methods increased from 17% in 2002 to 41% in 2009. In contrast, bills paid by mail decreased from 75% to 54% of total payments during the same time. In-person payments decreased from 8% in 2002 to 5% in 2009.5

Whatever your role in the process, your single connection to MasterCard RPPS links you to the vast majority of industry service providers and delivers valuable automated solutions. The MasterCard RPPS network is designed to optimize data accuracy, speed delivery, and secure your transactions. Faster Payments and Greater Operational Efficiency and Accuracy

Electronic bill payments transmitted via MasterCard RPPS are posted and settled much more quickly than paper-based payments or other types of electronic transactions.

  • Account editing, routing, settlement, and posting functions are all typically completed within 24 hours.
  • Settled in a good funds environment, MasterCard RPPS transactions provide a high level of payment assurance that standard paper remittances simply cannot duplicate.
  • Advanced risk-management procedures provide robust security for all your transactions.

Automated delivery of electronic payments significantly boosts operational efficiency versus paper, reducing the number of check-and-list items and the employee-hours devoted to slow, expensive, error-prone manual processing.

  • Sophisticated edits greatly reduce the potential for returns by validating account information before MasterCard RPPS transmits a payment. Billers receive only the record types they can process, avoiding the costs, inconvenience, and delay that can result from incorrect transmissions.
  • Automated payment reversals, at the biller's option, can reduce manual processing of exception items.
